Frerichs co-sponsored bill which increases grant money to students moves
to the House
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Yesterday, the Illinois State Senate passed a measure
increasing the amount of Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant money
students can receive. The legislation, co-sponsored by State Senator
Michael Frerichs (D-Champaign), increases the maximum award by $500 each
year over the next three years.
"MAP grants have increased student access to higher education and the
choice they have among institutions," said Senator Frerichs. "We need
to increase the maximum award because the formula is based on the 2004
tuition and fees, and as we know, tuition and fees have increased since
2004."
Senate Bill 1908 phases in increases of $500 to the Monetary Award
Program (MAP) over the next three years. For Fiscal Year 2009, the
maximum individual grant for an academic year increases from $4,968 to
$5,468. In 2010, it increase to $5,968 and in 2011 the maximum is set
at $6,468.
"MAP grants must keep pace with the rising cost of higher education in
order to maintain the original intent of the program, which was to allow
qualified students the opportunity to attend a school they otherwise
would be unable to afford," said Senator Frerichs.
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission determines eligibility and
grant amount. The grants can only be used for tuition or necessary fee
costs.
Senate Bill 1908 passed the Senate and now moves to the House of
Representatives for consideration.
