Springfield, IL - In an effort to further develop the state's Renewable Fuels Program, State Senator Michael Frerichs (D-Gifford) is sponsoring a bill that will create the Illinois Corn Grain to Fuel Research Consortium Assistance Program. Senate Bill 1559 was passed through the Senate Agriculture and Conservation Committee without a dissenting vote.
This program will provide grant money to members of the Consortium for ethanol and biodiesel facilities. $25 million in grant funds will be set aside in each of Fiscal Years 2008 - 2012 for Frerich's Assistance Program.
"There is no better time than right now to enhance the scope of renewable fuel research in Illinois," said Senator Frerichs. "Increased funding for ethanol and biodiesel facilities through this bill will help move us away from our strong dependence on foreign oil and other fossil fuels in the future."
In FY 2008 and FY 2009, 70% of the annual grant funds are to be used for ethanol facilities and 30% for biodiesel facilities. In FY 2010 and thereafter, no more than $5 million annually may be used for biodiesel facilities. Illinois groups with will receive first consideration from the Illinois Corn Grain to Fuel Research Consortium Assistance Program.
"We have invaluable agricultural resources in Illinois, including corn and grain, which hold the potential of bringing our state to the forefront of renewable fuel research," added Frerichs. "It would be foolish not to take full advantage of these natural benefits that our land has been graced with."
The bill now moves in front of the full Senate for a vote.
