Frerichs Hosts Credit Card Workshop for U of I Students

Champaign, IL - State Senator Michael Frerichs (D-Champaign) is teaming up with Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office and the University of Illinois Student Senate to sponsor a credit card management workshop for University of Illinois students. The workshop will provide an overview of how credit cards work and address ways to properly and safely use credit on a college campus. The event will take place on Monday, October 22nd at 7pm in the Pine Lounge of the Illini Union, 1401 W. Green St., Urbana.

The workshop is being held in response to the increasing number of college students nationwide who accumulate large amounts of debt through credit card use. The joint effort seeks to educate students on the importance of establishing and maintaining good credit early in life, as well as make them more confident in dealing with credit card companies that target college students.

The workshop will feature speakers from Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office as well as Lincoln Land Credit Counseling. The representative from Lincoln Land will discuss the basics of credit cards, personal credit reports and the importance of proper management of personal credit. The speaker from Attorney General Madigan's office will discuss ways that students can protect themselves against identity theft and consumer fraud.

"More and more students are graduating from college with an overwhelming amount of credit card debt," said Senator Frerichs. "This workshop aims to teach students how to avoid saddling themselves with a crushing financial burden through the misuse of credit cards."
